Liability insurance hassles

Well, GEICO decided to cancel my umbrella due to having over 5 properties. I have 9 rentals, a primary and an auto. I have 7 properties in MD and 3 in NM. Called around and lots of companies wouldn't insure with an umbrella if I had properties in 2 states. Finally State Farm indicated they could do a commercial umbrella over the 9 rental properties but they had to insure all of them to make them binding as of today. The quote from state farm for the 7 properties was very reasonable. But the quotes for the 3 in NM were 3.5 times higher. I went with insuring all 9 rentals with SF because of time running out on the policy to be canceled and I didn't want to be w/o an umbrella coverage. I am now in the process of obtaining a personal umbrella with either GEICO or SF over my auto and primary condo residence. I guess I'm posting this because it shows what a hassle all of this liability insurance can be. On top of that so many questions remain. Do I really need the personal umbrella? And for how much do I need to take out for both umbrellas? 1 million, 2 million, more?
