Who do people assume wholesalers are bad or dishonest?

I genuinely want to know why people assume wholesalers are bad or dishonest? I am thinking about becoming as a means to get into the real estate arena. I have gone to networking event and hear people talk negatively about wholesalers, online I see people saying don't trust a wholesaler. The main complaint are usually the non refundable fee or them overvaluing the property.

My question is why would anyone want to deal with someone like this? Non-refundable fees are NOT the norm in the RE industry. What makes someone with these features special and entitled to one?
