if you want a good deal you have to take the path of most resistance. The internet is too easy everyone and their grandmother can go online and find those listings without any effort. go to some REI meetings and meet some wholesalers in your area and/or find a good real estate agent who knows what investors want and can help you get properties that fit your criteria.

As for places online to find information about an area:1. Real estate agents/other investors are probably the best way to find information

especially for a newbie who might not know what exactly it is they are looking for or where to get it.

2.your local tax assessor website/county office can be a gold mine of information but can be quite "raw"depending on how well they have it organized for you.

3. Websites like Zillow and Neighborhood Scout have some really good information as well that is generally packaged all nice and neat for you since it is made as a service to attract owner occupant home buyers.

One thing that i cannot recommend enough however is that when you are researching a neighborhood. Go to one of the local parks and just eat lunch on one of the benches or something. watch the people and just observe to see if that is the type of people you are interested in doing business with.
