Mass Foreclosures and ABANDONED PETS
Kerri Panchuk | 01.25.08
A new trend of families leaving their pets behind after losing their homes to foreclosure has animal rights advocates concerned across the country, according to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). The leading animal advocacy group says an onslaught of new home foreclosures has led to an increase in animal abandonment reports.
"Abandoning pets, for any reason, is not only irresponsible – it is illegal," said Stephanie Shain, director of outreach for companion animals at the HSUS. "Pet owners may feel financially unable to care for their pets or are overwhelmed by a sudden move, but there are many alternatives to leaving pets behind. For those in need of help, we offer tips on easing the financial burden of pet ownership and finding pet-friendly housing."
Shain encourages families facing foreclosure to bring their pets to animal control or the local animal shelter and encourages asset managers and agents in the field to be extra aware of the possibility that animals could be trapped inside a foreclosed property. Shain says the worst thing that could happen to a pet is to remain abandoned inside a locked, secluded home. In an interview, she told DSNews.com that specialists working in default servicing can make a difference in the animals' lives by surveying foreclosure properties as soon as possible.
“Abandoned pets face a grim future,” the Humane Society asserted in a press statement. “Many pets trapped inside abandoned homes aren't found until they're on the brink of starvation. Those lucky enough to reach a shelter have about a 50-percent chance of being adopted.”
