I Need WordPress Website Advice

I need help and advice... I would like to build (for my own thought-leadership platform) a WordPress site from scratch. I’m pretty sure I can do it myself, but I want to know which theme templates have the most to offer in terms of customization. I have identified a possible solution that would give me what I need, but I want to see if any of you have any words of wisdom. I am also in the dark about which addons and plugins I should use. Do you have a standard list of what you like to use?

@Bryce Witcher I built my site myself years ago with wordpress. At the time there were lot of blogs about blogging that talked about the many options. I really got into it for a while. My guess is there still are a lot of sites out there to help you set up yours.
