Kitchen Countertop Refinishing

I've got a SFH in a great school zone that's loosing it's long term tenant soon. Looking to slap some paint down and rent it fast. But the pink 1980's laminate kitchen countertops are an eyesore. Anyone have any experience with refinishing kitchen countertops in a rental? Is it durable enough to last 5 years? Is it cost effective?
