Looking for an Investment property - Probable future move

All,

I am new here at BP and looking for some advice from the experts. I live in San Francisco on a rental property, where I pay 3,000 $ as rent. I couldn't afford to buy a rental property here in the bay area due to insane pricing on smaller houses. I am eventually planning to either Dallas / Austin to have an affordable living. My choice of the place is due to the high availability of tech jobs. I have reached out to few of my colleagues and found Irving / Plano to be good school districts and affordable housing prices.

I have few questions

  • What do you experts think about this approach ? My plan is to move in another 3 to 4 years but I don't want to pay more later
  • Properties are priced at 400 - 500 k in Dallas area and I can afford the mortage  along with paying rent over here in california. It's going to be slightly higher than paying mortage alone in california if I buy a property here. ( Properties in Cali are priced at 700K + )
  • What you do you folks think about renting the properties around Irving / Plano ?
  • Are there any potential places I can look at other than Irving  / Plano ? (I can drive 20 - 30 mins to work if needed )
