Experience with Abandoned Wells?
Does anyone have experience dealing with an abandoned well on a property they have purchased?
My primary residence (complete interior gut), purchased almost two years ago has an abandoned well about 15 feet from the exterior on one of the sides. I put all new plumbing the house, so I know for a fact that the well does not tie into the dwelling. Currently, I have a large concrete slab acting as a well cap.
There are two primary concerns I have and want to get the communities opinions on them and see what can be done to remedy:
- 1. The concrete slab has a crack in it and I'm concerned the opening is providing a breeding ground for mosquito's (as we have a pretty bad mosquito problem in our back yard).
- 2. I'm concerned with the potential liability of someone falling in. This has become more prevalent as I now have a one year old who is starting to run around.
Would a better/more appropriate well cap be a sufficient solution or do I need to look into filling the well (if that's even a possibility)?
