siding/flashing problem on roof

The small gable in the photo is over the front door. The home inspector told me to have kickout flashing installed on the small gable because right now it doesn't have it and the rain water is hitting the side of the house instead of being thrown away from the house....

So I was having some other roofing work done and they told me it would be $200 to add the flashing. But then after looking at it they said there was no way to add the flashing with the existing siding (above and next to gable) still there, because of the way the siding is cut. They said I would have to have the existing siding removed and replaced with hardiplank. The total cost would then be $935.

Do I really need to have the kickouts installed and pay $935 or is there another cheaper solution? The house is going to be repainted so the time to replace the siding would be now, before the painting, if I were to do it. The siding in the photo is masonite. thanks.
