Choosing exterior paint color

The house I'm fixing is stucco and concrete block. The external paint color right now is purple and badly needs a new paint job. I'm having hard time choosing the new color for the outside. The other houses in the neighborhood are bland, pastel-ish colors, sometimes brown--none of them really do it for me personally, but I'm trying to get into the head of a potential renter. Also, would it be better to go for a darker color to hide any future imperfections, or does it matter? Thanks.
