Relocating a Utility Service Feed?
Analyzing a potential deal, where the electrical service utility (including the breaker box and meter) has been enclosed, and it's actually in the house! (I know... kinda weird).
Anyone ever move the service box / feed / meter, or have it done by public utility company? Can you share your experience or "how-to" in this case?
I had this done on a place I was flipping. To have the service moved along with a new breaker box/ meter it was about 2300$. But I also know things vary a lot across the country. I would just call 3 different electricians and have them come bid the job. Bids here are typically free, but I would do this with the intentions of using one of those people. Or if not maybe offer to pay them for their time in getting estimates.
Having the meters in a utility room is fairly common in multi-unit buildings, but the only time I have typically seen it on an SFH is when the meter was in a carport which was later enclosed into a garage. My personal residence once had the meter in the garage ... only in this case, the meter was on the outside of the house before the garage was attached.
Moving the meter to outside is pretty easy, depending on how far you wish to have it from the existing shutoff and panel. There are regulations on the distance allowed between the meter and the main shutoff. Last summer, we moved the meters on a duplex from the back of the building (utility companies do not like them there) to the front corner by the sidewalk - where the service mast was already located. Our distance to the existing panels was far enough we had to bury the entrances in conduit and place shutoffs in the basement. We then went from the shutoffs to the existing panels. The whole job was around $3500.00
Thanks Gents.... that concurs w/ the information I received from utility company! Appreciate your notes!
