Where do you find General Contractors?

Question

Besides Craigslist and the local classifieds, where do you usually go to find a good gc?

Any websites that have bidding for local jobs?

Honestly, I don't trust ads. I have seen some of the biggest disasters who have nice ads and even a website.  You might try going to Lowes or Home Depot and asking for recommendations at the Pro Desk.

The same goes for Painters.  Go to the dedicated paint stores and ask those who service the trades person almost daily.  I suggest being very specific about your needs when asking to referrals.

I don't really like the "Get a contractor from Lowes or HD" advice either. Too often, the schlub who has to get up at 0-dark-30 and go get materials for that day on the job is someone who isn't organized enough to deal with a professional supply house and set up his deliveries days in advance. 
	 
	  Instantly, you know this person has no staff, little or no help, and limited resources. Smart and stable contractors rarely go into Lowes or HD to make morning "Oh shit I need a 2x4" runs. They're ordering materials in advance and having them drop-shipped straight to the job.

Angie's List.  It's not that you can't find some people at Home Depot because you can.  But in our market, they are just as often the guys who aren't big enough or organized enough to get their supplies delivered.

Other REI's in your area that you network with on BP or other investing groups.

Guild Quality is a serious list of top-notch contractors. You might also drive around in various neighborhoods and see who is working, even knock on the door and ask the homeowner how they are feeling. I like the other ideas such as Home Depot and asking your network and Angie's List. It can also be a good way to *build* a network - by starting a conversation wtih "Can I ask you a question...?"  Often people are excited to tell you what they know (unless they want to Bogard their contractor ;)

Angie's List is a paid service you can use.  But I get the best referrals from my network of investors.

I also recommend stopping at every rehab you see and talking to whoever is there doing work.
