Charge rent in a different currency?
With all this talk of hyperinflation and all that silliness I was thinking. Can a landlord legally charge rent in a different currency? I guess I am curious on the whole topic. Can you charge in Pesos on the Mexican border or Canadian Dollars on the Canadian border?
The idea would be that somebody thinks that the US Dollar is going to callapse but they feel the Canadian Dollar will remain strong. So could if my rent is currently $1,000/m (US), and I felt this way could I charge the equivilent in Candian Dollars for the term of the lease? The idea would be that through the year I would have my income protected by being paid in an appreciating currency.
I know that it would be a weird conversation to have a tenant pay this way but I am more curious on the legality of it?
