Saving for college for little ones

Way back when, 11 years ago when my nephew was born, I started a college saving plan for him. I searched the internet for the best idea, and land on the 529 plan. Since then my family has contributed $200/mo for him and it's produced mediocre results, at best. Things have changed now. I'm married, looking to have kids, and want them to go to college. Although, now that I have gone further with my investing (2 rental properties) I think what would be the best way to set something up for my future kids. Any ideas? Also, is there anything I can do to better my nephews 529 account? What do you think?!
