Here's some math that is far more relevant. It was independents that helped elect Obama in the first place. He carried VA by 7 pts in the election last November. Independents swung over to the Pubs in the VA elections in an overwhelming fashion. Exit polls showed that the reason for this was for concern about the economy and spending, something neither party has showed much constraint on the last decade. The other surprising issue was that the top three elected positions in the state all went to the same party. That has never happened in VA before.

Obama, rightly so, made the his election about the economy after things went to hell last September. He made a lot of promises in doing so. Economically speaking, he hasn't lived up to any of them. You better believe that if things don't get significantly better in the economy in the next two years, he is going to have a dog fight on his hands.
