Who is concerned about the riots in Baltimore ?

I am a bit concerned , my wife works downtown , a nurse at Hopkins .  I think its a powder keg ready to explode . They held the fans in the stadium at the baseball game due to rioting . I remember as a kid the riots in 1968 , ( the reason we moved to the burbs) . The next few weeks will be touch and go depending on how things get handled .

I was on the east side of Baltimore much of Friday and all afternoon yesterday, not just to the north of the Hopkins complex. Saw nothing. I'm going back tomorrow as usual and don't expect any problem.

The protests were 95% peaceful, with 5% making the news as violent scofflaws looking to harm people who have done nothing wrong. I have a number of friends who went to the protest as press or photographers and they confirmed this. The BPD handled the situation well; far better than they have in other parts of the country. I'd be more worried about your houses in College Park, MD next time the Terps make it to the tournament.

I am a bit worried about the damage to the city's already crappy reputation. We don't need this.

They arent peace full today .  7 police in the hospital , 1 unresponsive  several with broken bones , looting a CVS store , 2 burning cop cars , and the night is young .  I had a customer down by pickles pub near the stadium and the other night the "protesters" were throwing rocks at the patrons .

This is why I have no desire to invest in war zones

Now a state of emergency has been declared , national guard is being mobilized . This is not going to be a good night for Baltimore .   I have a feeling this is going to be a bad week ahead.

This is crazy.

Insurance companies may worry the most I guess.

But I hope people and properties will all be ok there.

Why peace is so hard to find.

The Baltimore City School System is shut down for tomorrow. Sounds like they are expecting more trouble.

I work near there and know people that have to go through (now around) the area.  It was like one of those "it can never happen in my state" things and now it is happening.

im a little bit worried but very happy i never drove down there to look at the 12000$ row houses i saw for sale a year ago when i was poking around jersey CL....

I am all for a peaceful protest but i know in nyc many peaceful protests go on to block traffic in midtown manhattan and close down bridges while the police look on and stand on the side lines like a bunch of trained miniature poodles....  No one thinks about the tourists in the taxis that spend 80$ on what should have been an 18$ ride and the working class people stuck on the cross town busses being made late to work... and when they shut down the Brooklyn bridge the traffic backs up across the bridge on the brooklyn queens expressway causing headaches for tons of truck drivers who just want to get there trucks back to the lot and get on the train to go home...

My point is police have been tolerating so much disrespect and now the criminals are realizing and taking advantage i saw the footage of the CVS looting interrupt my CNBC a few times today... now police are in danger because there rightfully scared to shoot anyone without a gun... even if its a mob of angry criminals who out number the cops... i think they need to call in 500 ambulances and arm the police with the softest smallest bird shot maybe a .410 and have them aim for the feet of anyone looting but is unarmed.... I don't want to see any lives lost or a war break out but at the same time it needs have a lid put on it without TANKS rolling in and troops with gas masks tear gassing everyone to just go home and pack up there car and burn the city down.... if a war breaks out and things go too far i can see baltimore becoming a ghost town...

@Matthew Paul I understand if its ground zero by all means she should stay home and I'm not familiar with the city so use your best judgement but i just hope everyone who works at the hospital doesn't decide to stay home because than anyone who needs the hospital would be in a a lot of trouble but use your best judgement and im only so interested in the whole topic because baltimore has always been an interest to me... i drove through many times going down south and stopped for lunch a few times...

Also i would consider some of the leaders of the groups of looters (if there organizing lookouts and conspiring these "strategic looting and scattering throughout the city") terrorist.... its a harsh word but really thats what they are by some standards taking advantage and using fear or terror to there advantage..... and WTF are they looting from a CVS?? PRESCRIPTION NARCOTIS so really theres probably some mastermind organizing a criminal gang to take advantage of the current situation in baltimore... Its at least a RICO case for the group committing looting the cvs and than burned a cop car up the street from the CVS..... who knows what they will do next if they get away with it all after they spend all the money they make from selling the stolen the drugs from the CVS...

I have faith that National guard can assist the state police to lock down the curfew tonight and hopefully every local detective will be on duty tonight and there will be record arrests and hopefully catch the few bad seeds that are probably causing the violence... But than again maybe a hospital isn't a safe place so use your judgement and i hope everything goes well...

Keep us posted and stay safe

Yes things changed today in Baltimore.

I was at the Baltimore REIA meeting this evening in Canton when the governor declared a state of emergency, and the restaurant announced it would be closing at 9. Schools won't open tomorrow and I think there's a curfew all week.

It's painful. DC took 25 years to recover after the 1968 riots. Baltimore is already so fragile, I don't know how it can withstand such a blow.

The city and state authorities are not helping by stretching out the investigation this long. After, what, 10 days, they can't establish a second-by-second account of what happened from when the young man was arrested and handcuffed, and when he arrived at the station in the back of a police vehicle, unable to breathe or talk? Uncertainty is the worst possible thing for the city, it's like a creeping poison gas. They really need to get some answers out there.

Well I don't know if Baltimore is going to be a great place for rehab/resell this next little while. Of course, my very first rehab will be ready for market in a couple of weeks.

I don't have much to say about the shameful behavior down in the city at the moment...

I do think it's cute though that @Peter John K gives the rioters the benefit of the doubt in suggesting they're looting narcotics from a CVS.  They aren't taking narcotics - they're running out of there with bags of Doritos and snickers bars.  I'm sure there's the occasional lucky one who scores some prescription drugs or a bottle of Jack Daniels, but most of the looters are running out of the stores with boxes of tampons and slim jims.  It's not just CVS, it's many many many local businesses... corner shops, liquor stores, freaking shoe stores.

come on Doritos... Really..... not taking narcotics???? Little pills fit in your pocket so of course there gona grab some some munchies after they realize cvs stopped selling cigarettes....  A purge??? It may be unrelated and a joke flyer that got out of hand... Or the ring leader has a younger brother in school and the bloods and crips peace treaty I heard one minister talk about on the news was really a merger of sorts monopolizing the criminal activity..... Some of the people may be just be uneducated poor people in a bad situation going with the flow but the ringleaders are real hard dirty scum bag criminals....

The police are a joke and that's what we should be ashamed of.... Both the mayor and police chief's news briefs make me think the city is run by bumbling idiots.... It's a shame all the educated people today go into tech finance or medicine...

Baltimore NEVER recovered from the 1968 riots .    This sounds like history repeating itself   http://www.baltimoremagazine.net/2007/5/1/100-year...

One of the problems you find in Baltimore is that as soon as someone is able to extricate themselves from poverty, they pick up and move their families to the suburbs. The only folks left are the yuppies, empty nesters, and hipsters in Canton, Fed Hill, Charles Village, and a handful of pockets here and there. The city will recover. There are citizen-leaders who want change and who can make change in the right ways. The conversations and transition will be difficult, but it's possible.

Every state and county has a place where the undesirable people stay. For Maryland its Baltimore City. Homicide is 3 times any other county in Maryland. Houses are cheap for a reason and there are alot of vacants for a reason. Some reasons are the crime, high property taxes, high water bills, city government making it hard for investors with fines and dumb permits for the simplest things. This equals to a low amount or rebuilding in Baltimore. I try to be a positive force in Baltimore by rehabbing houses but it is a drain dealing with Baltimore city. I will be transitioning out very soon. Investors Baltimore City government is the biggest slumlord of all. They will fine you for little things but wont clean there property.

If anyone is looking to liquidate their properties in Baltimore City let me know.  Not sell but liquidate.  Be fearful when others are greedy yada yada yada and so on.
