Thoughts on Certain Area for Real Estate

Hey everyone, I have been a long time listener but this will be my first post. I currently live in the New London, CT area for work and have been here around 4 months now. I have been seriously looking into real estate and I am by no means tied down to this city and I was looking for some advice on the best avenue to take for my first purchase. New London, CT is by no means a huge city and I am very hesitant to even consider buying real estate around here but the one thing that really keeps me coming back to it is my employer. I work for General Dynamics Electric Boat which has decades long contracts with the US government and the turnover rate is relatively high in the company so my thoughts are if I could choose a place that is within commute distance there and within the price range of the average employee that maybe that could be a great idea but I want to know if people think that is too much of an assumption and risk to make? I am more than willing to move to other cities to pursue real estate while working but obviously there is a lot of time and effort to move cities and jobs. My degree is aerospace engineering so Hunstville, AL has been very interesting to me as well for not only work but also real estate but while I might not be tied down to where I live now its also not as simple as just packing up and moving. Any insight, advice, or knowledge from others would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone
