New to this, starting in Vancouver BC Canada. Looking for help

Hi there, I am a firefighter in Vancouver, and have been wanting to get into real estate investing for a while now, but prices here are very expensive with mortgage rates that can only be fixed for 5 years. Is there anyone here who is doing real estate investing and is able to help? 

My wife is American, and we have been thinking of looking at doing some down there as well but unsure how that would work.
