My name is Jared and I'm originally from Michigan. I moved to the Northern Virginia area about a year ago for work (I'm a civil engineer). My long-term goal in real estate is to build a portfolio of multi-family/mixed use rentals to supplement and eventually replace my 9-5 income. In the short term, I'd like to close my first deal within the next six months. I originally found Bigger Pockets through the personal finance blogosphere (in various interviews Paula Pant and others recommended BP to anyone interested in real estate). Since then I've been listening to podcasts and reading articles regularly and in the past month finally decided that it's time to get involved in the community and start making things happen.

Jared Dorvinen Yes the nova market is tough for multi-families. You can find some in Maryland, and maybe DC but I hear you on the commute to Fairfax.
What a lot of people do in Nova, is purchase a single family and house hack it by renting out the basement, or other rooms in the house. You want to check with a lawyer before you do so to make sure it's a viable option for that particular unit, but this is how people get past the lack of multifamilies in the area.
Hope to see you around and some of the local meetups. there's one that meets in Fairfax each month if you're interested after work sometime, I can find the details for the next one.
