I've been off-and-on looking at real estate investing for years.  I've discovered just as many negative responses as positive ones if not more negative, which is why I haven't pulled the trigger.  I believe people selling real estate "systems/books" make money on those systems and not on actual investing.  I'm hoping that's not completely true. I'm hoping to meet successful investors who are willing to exchange ideas and prove me wrong.  I like the idea, but I'm just not sure about the reality.

@Brian Lacey I'm the VP of PR for the Katy High School Athletics Booster Club. My daughter is a freshman, so I'm new to this position, and this last summer we moved to a house on a couple acres in Katy, for the sole purpose of our kids going to Katy High School (I have a 6th grader, and pre-k, so I'll be involved for some time). It didn't escape me that my home value should only go up based on the school's reputation, and the limited options for a home with a sizeable lot, but I don't have any data to back that up.
