Young, motivated, and willing to learn first-time investor from Raleigh, NC

My name is Trevor and, at 30 years old, I find myself trapped in an office working for the Federal Government. Like many, I humbly want to learn all I can about real estate investment and hope to build wealth over time.

I moved to the Triangle area a few years back and completed my Masters of Public Administration from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. I grew up on a farm in rural MN and am not afraid of hard work. I find myself eager to establish my own business and succeed or fail through my own efforts.

I am currently pouring through every real estate investment book I can find and would love an opportunity to work with or learn from an experienced real estate investor. I am interested in buy and hold opportunities and have no grand illusions of getting rich quick.

    Trevor, welcome to BiggerPockets!  I'd suggest inviting some local investors to coffee or a meal and just talk about their learnings and what you might eventually want to do and how to get there.  You may run across some opportunities to volunteer time to them to learn.  Look for local meet-ups too, they are awesome.   And keep saving, reading, and listening to podcasts.

    @Trevor Fleck welcome to BP where you will find more than you ever wanted to know about RE investing! You should figure out what your employment and financial goals are and work backward from there. Do you plan on being employed forever and looking at RE as an income stream in retirement? Do you want to retire early and replace your current income with rental income? Are you planning on renting homes for a while and then selling them for a gain and living off the cash (appreciation), etc?

    Hello Trevor,

       I started just like you. Eager to get going, but needing the right map to set the course. I can say after trying multi level marketing, starting an automobile brokerage company, developing and deploying day trade systems, the easiest way to design the ideal life is through real estate. 

      And in my experience, I have had incredible mentoring and training by some of the top investors in the country. I would say that lifestyles unlimited would be the perfect next step for someone like you. For me, it's been less than 2 years and I have four rental homes, with plans to transition to multifamily in the next year or so. Life is too short to accept a life that was designed by anyone but you! Go live it!!

    Check out the free BiggerPockets Podcast - A weekly podcast with interviews and a ton of great advice. And you get the benefit of having over 80 past ones to catch up on.

    Two Great reads, I bought both J. Scott The Book on Flipping Houses,The Book on Estimating ReHab Costshttp://www.biggerpockets.com/flippingbook

    Locate and attend 3 different local REIA club meetings great place to meet people gather resources and info. Here you will meet wholesalers who provide deals and all the cash buyers (rehabbers) you will need.

    Consider checking out HUD homes for small multi's owner occupied gets first crack.

    You might consider Niche or Specialized Housing like student housing. Rents can be 2-4 times more. Remember you don't have to own a property to control it.

    @Trevor Fleck Immerse yourself in the local real estate market as much as possible. Aside from the advice already given, check out a TREIA meeting, attend open houses in areas that you think you'd like to invest in, offer to take an investor or agent to lunch just to pick their brain for an hour, volunteer for Habitat for Humanity or a similar organization that RE investors have an interest in. And most importantly, stay active on BP and keep us updated with both your successes and failures. We all learn from one another around these parts!
