Can I invest in the USA if I am a foreigner?

Hello everybody,

I am Leon Korpel from the Netherlands. In the Netherlands the government is busy building a law with stricter rules against investing and owning real estate.

At the moment I am reading the book ' No money down. Very interesting book. I have some property in the Netherlands but I am curious about investing in other countries. 

Can you invest in real estate , in the USA, if you are a foreigner?
I would like to read up on this. Can someone sent me in the right direction so I can start my research about this topic.
