Details are still coming in, but his Atlanta area apartment building had an explosion resulting in injuries and possible deaths. Details say the management company had contacted the gas utility to report a gas odor prior to the explosion.

For the sake of discussion and learning, I thought it would be interesting to discuss what your policy is for dealing with situations like this. I tell tenants to contact the gas company immediately and exit the property until they arrive to evaluate the situation. In my short term rental I have a CO2 and natural gas detector to alarm occupants. I actually a concern around a gas leak and found the gas company to be very responsive and they come out for free to investigate. Better safe than sorry.

How do you deal with the risk of gas leaks or CO2 threats? If you had a report of a gas smell in an apartment building, would you take steps to evacuate the building?
