Oregon Considering State Wide Rent Control
Oregon is considering a bill with state wide rent control. As landlords, this is obvious an issue incredibly important to our industry.
Rent control creates ghettos. Rent control drives up the cost of housing. Rent control creates housing shortages. Rent control forces landlords who might keep the rent where it is, to raise it the maximum allowable amount. Rent control is bad for landlords. Rent control is bad for tenants. Rent control is bad for municipalities. There exists not a single economist, whether Austrian, Keynesian, Chicago or any other school or thought, whether from a liberal or a conservative school of thought that supports rent control.

MODERATOR NOTE: Discussion of rent control is allowed. Do not let the discussion veer off into politics, right v left, or anything of that nature. Political discussions are against forum rules.

@Russell Brazil how does rent control create a housing shortage?
It creates housing shortages via 2 routes. Developers build less, because there is less demand for rental housing because investors dont want to deal with rent control. Then existing rentals get locked up for many years as tenants dont want to move to higher cost units.
