Insurance for Rentals

Can anyone give me some guidance on insurance for rentals. Do you notify the ins co? Do you convert to a rental property? If the tenant is negligent does the insurance still pay out? thanks

Hi @Shannon Hall,

Definitely call an insurance agent. The policy will change, but it's better to know you have your risk managed than not. Not to mention that insurance companies will find every which way to avoid paying a claim. 

Also, require your tenants to hold renter's insurance. That's typically the first layer of protection before you'd be required to make a claim on your policy.

I bought an umbrella policy. It cost 200 per year for a million dollars coverage above and beyond your regular insurance.
