Choosing tile for apartment?

What type of tile would you guys choose for an apartment? The building is in a working class neighborhood.
I'm thinking about 12" tile, ceramic, class 5 (very tough). I don't want to go too classy because it may get thrashed alot.

For rentals, you want to keep your costs down and as such, choose tile you can get for under $1 per square foot.
My guyes install for $2.25 per sq. so my total cost is usually around $3 per sq. ft.
