letter from county assessor

Hi and thank you for your replies!

Curious how you address letters received from the tax assessor (for us it is a county assessor) asking (demanding?) that we send P&L data for the property.  clearly they are attempting to determine what the place is worth and i highly doubt it would be to decrease our taxes.  Personally, i do not believe it is any of their business what our P&L looks like even if they claim to use the income-method to determine value.

Do you send data?  if so, what data do you send?  do you simply ignore the letter?

@Mike R.

I have never received a letter requesting P&L. Although I have seen such letters.. I don't know assessment law in your state, but here in wisconsin If you refuse resonable request for information. The assessor will place whatever value they see fit and you have no recourse of appeal.

If it is a commercial property (5+) they are valued by noi... So maybe that is why they are requesting it???  I can't imagine anyone providing an actual, I would assume it would have bloated expenses and vacancy..

Don't get me wrong I hate taxes as much as the next guy. But the purpose of assessment is equality.  They are not singling you out, they are trying to determine value. There is a lot of bad advice on this site in regards to assessment... I would learn your assesment law specific to your state ,

Peter
