Water Leak Detection Devices

After 2 weeks of dealing with several different forms of water damage (leaking water heaters, refrigerator lines cracking, toilet tank seal cracking, etc), I'm going on the offensive.  I started researching leak detection devices, and was wondering if anyone has experiences good or bad with these.

@Roy N. Thanks for your input.  We've been implementing many of the preventative measures you mentioned.  I agree that preventative measures are the best.  Unfortunately, we have corrosive water in our area, so we experience some issues more regularly than in other markets.

@Matthew Paul I should have been more clear in what I meant by detection device.  Here's a link to one of the systems I found online last night.  I've been reading about all different types, and this one seems to be one of the most robust (also one of most expensive).  FloLogic Water Leak Detection System
