Urgently searching for an attorney with landlord/tenant expertise
Hi guys, hoping for your guidance. I am a physician in NYC, a friend asked me to help a single mother with two teenage children who ended up on the streets after being evicted in Houston. “Genius” me agreed to rent a house for them in exchange for fostering a few of my dogs (I run a dog rescue group.) I specifically told the woman to find a property that will allow multiple dogs. She found a house, i paid the usual fees (pet deposit, security deposit, first month rent.) My name and her name appear on the lease as co-tenants. She moved in on July 31 with her kids and 4 of my dogs. She then proceeded to harass the landlord and property manager about EVERYTHING- the sewer, the gate, the garage - everything was not to her liking. She was truly viscous and threatening - so bad that several days later we got a notice to vacate within 3 days, citing dogs as the reason to vacate. I spoke with the property manager - he said they cannot have an insane person as a tenant. I immediately emailed the landlord and property manager that I agree with their decision (i haven’t stepped my foot on this property, don’t even have a key.) Unfortunately, my lovely co-tenant refused to vacate and continues to threaten the landlord- filing “remedy and repair “ , contacting neighbors, calling him slumlord, opening his private mail — psycho full steam ahead. Understandably, the landlord filed for an eviction- the hearing is on Sep 13 in Houston. I am lost - I cannot have an eviction on my record- I live in NYC and rent. This psychopath is also threatening me because I won’t pay September rent (why would I if we are asked to vacate?). She is calling my job, bashing me all over social media, etc. She is also refusing to release my dogs and is denying me access to the property. The only thing I can add is that she signed the lease on my behalf- the realtor was trying to send me a document for electronic signature, but I couldn’t open it at work, so the realtor sent the document to this person and she put my signature on. I am distraught, searching for an attorney who could somehow rescue me from an eviction record. Would be most grateful for any thoughts/guidance from this group… Lina
