3rd Party verification service

I am in escrow right now for a triplex and am in the loan approval process. Everything is going well but I got just got a message that we need to do a conference call with this third party verification service and the holders of the 2 existing mortgages we have. Has anyone else had to do this? It just seems a little weird. Also what if we had 4 mortgages? Would they have to call all 4 companies? Seems like they would want all this stuff in writing not over the phone.
