Purchasing under an LLC vs. No LLC

I am interested in starting to invest in real estate, but I'm wondering what the benefits/detriments are to purchasing under an LLC vs. purchasing as an individual. I know that LLC's provide an umbrella that can protect assets in case of personal shortfalls, but I would love a more detailed analysis of the pros and cons, especially in regards to taxes.
