Portfolio lending vs big banks

I'm starting out in my real estate investing and like a good investor I'm doing my research. During this process I've read about several different types of loans. However, my question is....is it better to get your 5-8 loans from the bigger banks then go to a portfolio lender or are you better off starting and building a relationship with a portfolio lender and cutting the big bank out all together?
