GAS OR ELECTRIC FURNACE!!!

Which of these are cheaper on the bills? My houses are in Indiana and I had the furnaces converted from gas to electric. The tenants have been getting $700+ electric bills this winter. If it were gas the bill would be $300 per month plus electric that would be usually under $100. Could the furnaces be installed improperly or is it that gas is cheaper and more efficient to heat a home?
