So I've decided that I'm going to go to a few auctions just to see the process and hopefully how some homes are evaluated but I have no idea as to how I actually go to one..

• Is there a certain time (or day) when auctions are done?
• I'm aware that they are at the courthouse but can anyone just show up or is it preregistered?
• Is there some type of certification required?
• Do I have to dress a certain way?
• Is there a fee to enter?

These are just a few questions I have regarding home auctions and access to them but any and ALL information is helpful.

And I'm located in Fort. Washington, MD but I believe our courthouse is in Upper Marlboro, MD (close to where I went for high school)

1.  Is there a certain time (or day) when auctions are done?

Each county is different in the way they conduct auctions.  I recently purchased a property at a sheriff's sale in Noblesville, IN.  We were allowed to review the opening bid for each property after 10:00 A.M.  The auction started at 12:00.  This allows some time for research before the auction begins.

2.  I'm aware that they are at the courthouse but can anyone just show up or is it preregistered?

When I went to the sheriff's sale it was conducted in the lobby of the sheriff's office and anyone was allowed to enter and observe the auction.  They did not require a registration in advance.  However, you will need to bring a cashiers check if you are serious about buying a property.  The check must be large enough to cover the cost of the property and a $23 filing fee. 

3.  Is there some type of certification required?

In my case, no certification was required to participate.  

4.  Do I have to dress a certain way?

There was no "dress code" at the auction I attended.  Some people were business casual and others wore jeans.

5.  Is there a fee to enter?

I was charged a $23 filing fee when I purchased the property.  However, there is no fee to show up and observe the auction.
