Question

We're going up there next week to look around with an eye toward relocating.

Is it a "trust deed" state?

Are there any weird things to know about property taxes, insurance or how to take title in Oregon?

Any other information you care to share.

We're looking at both the Salem area and the Medford area.

Portland metro/vancouver is pretty high in foreclosures.  The market is pretty stable due to it being a great place to live.  There are plenty of houses that need rehabbing.

You asked if there is anything weird about OR.

Assume OR is pretty liberal or more libertarian than TX. First state with a bottle bill, first major metro area with an urban growth boundary (Portland), focus on green issues, right to die stand, exemption from the federal Medicare program so that they can factor in quality of life when deciding what is to be covered.

OR tends to be split politically. Liberal areas along I-5 (major cities mostly) and then conservative farming areas further east (cattle and wheat ranchers).

For your wife check out Bend and similar. High desert with 300 days of sun. Snow mostly on the mountains. On the west of the Cascades expect a lot of rain compared to what you might see in TX. Lots of gray days in the winter with plenty of rain.

Wine country Salem and north. Number 2 state after CA when it comes to wine production.

Anything else "weird" about OR? I think they're a community property state too, aren't they? I know their ppty tax and homeowner's insurance are not as killer as in TX. OTOH they do have an income tax.

I have a neice and her husband in Portland area,  Hillsboro, so we'll spend some time visiting with them too.

We had been considering both CO and OR but my wife thinks she'd like to spend some time in OR as for some funny reason she thinks it gets cold in CO! I told her that it only does that in the ski areas, but she does know that it gets hot there too. Earlier this spring it was hotter in Ft. Collins most days than it was here in TX.

TD state - yes.

Check out NWREII as they are the big REIA in the state. Mostly in the metro Portland, southern WA area. They have a mailing list that is open to non-club members.

Great state. Not perfect but otherwise really good.

If you are considering WA I can connect you with a retired TX lawyer who lives in Tacoma. He does deals with private money or notes. He has lived in WA for some time now and is pretty active on some public forums.

I have lived in OR at different points. Always in the metro Portland area. I have done some minor work in the communities you mentioned when I was working for NeXT, etc.
