KITCHEN ISLAND SIZE - THOUGHTS?

The house in San Clemente CA has an open concept plan with views to the front of the house. The kitchen is in the middle of the first floor enabling it to easily service both front areas and back yard. I'm not sure on size of island I should do.

Questions:

  •  What is the longest island you have ever put into a home?
  • Have you used Quartz (it's now more popular than granite)
  • If you used quartz and it had seams, were they very noticeable?

The renderings shown Page 2 of San Clemente Spec are done using a 14' island. Quartz will need to be in 2 pieces, meaning seams. I don't want the island to overwhelm, but make a statement and provide seating. I've seen them this long before, but wanted to know your thoughts and experiences.

Weigh in as builders and homeowners please.

@J Scott (can someone please @mention him, I never can!)

@Kenneth Bell

P.S. AS LONG AS I HAVE YOUR ATTENTION!!  In secondary bathrooms, shower/tub combo or 6' tile/glass shower?

Granite is outdated and in a modern home in the beach cities, you want to go with quartz or similar. I can get you wholesale pricing on quartz stone which is the off brand of Cesarstone. The slabs come 4.5' X 10' so you would have a seam with anything bigger than that. A good fabricator can hide the seam well. Some of the darker colors can also help hide it, but for your home, I would be going bright white all the way.

I think 14' is too large based on the rendering, but would have to be on site to see it in person to know for sure.

I'm going to the FIBI meeting in Manhattan Beach Tuesday, maybe I could stop by before the meeting.

Bathrooms, how many do you have other than the master! Typically, the bath shower combos are the way to go, but if you have 4 baths, you can certainly do straight shower,though I would not use 6"X6" tiles.
