knocking on doors? foreclosure question

So I pulled up the county forclosure list for this week and went to 2 locations and knocked on the doors to see if they would work something out.

Is this advised? Is there a better way to do it? I am not sure what I would have done if they would have said yes lets work something out. Can I work out something with them so that I it does not have to be bid out?

What would you guys suggest? A better way to go about not having to go through the bidding process?
