I can think of many, and as I write this, I look up from my keyboard and see a wall covered with books that I could mention that would answer this question.  However, there are two books that every REI should read and understand, that based on my experiences, way too many clearly  have not.
REI is 99% Math, and 1%...no wait, that's math too.  The two books that are imperative reading, and understanding how to apply them to REI are:
1 - Geometry
2 - Algebra
