Introduction to the Bigger Pockets community.
Hey everyone!
My name is Tom, I am 27 years old and I've worked as a mechanical engineer for about 5 years. I've started my career with project management, working for the engineering division in my town's department of public works. From there I acquired a job working for a consulting firm (who had put a bid into my engineering department for another project at the time). While working for this consulting firm, I was designing mechanical, electric, and plumbing systems for high end residential homes, as well as commercial projects (car washes, office spaces, housing communities, etc.). Here, I was mainly behind a computer for 10 hours a day for design work (with minor time out of the office for field work), and eventually moved on to work as a service engineer for a global leader in industrial equipment manufacturing. While working there, I managed the service department for the company's North American headquarters. My daily tasks were much more involved with customer communication and internal coordination (which I thought was more exiting than working behind a computer all day). Within North America, I managed all machine installations, machine testing, and machine training for all customers who purchased new machines. These projects required 2-8 weeks of coordination, depending on the equipment, and we acquired 10-15 new projects a year. I was also responsible for managing all service related issues that occurred on our equipment (several issues on most days, so it was quite fast paced). If i did not have the solution myself, I had to find it quickly (as you can imagine that customers get angry when their machines are not making money). I was also responsible for scheduling, coordinating, and following all service related travel visits. I had 3 technicians to work with, so we were quite a busy team. I performed service visits myself in emergency situations, but mostly performed visits more so regarding the relations with our customer's management. After nearly 3 years of working for the company, I found myself no longer having that feeling of moving forward, and felt more stagnant. Though I was payed well, and promised more to come, I saw what my routine would be for the next 30+ years and I decided I wanted a change. I began attending class after work towards becoming a certified home inspector. After passing my exams and receiving my license as a New York State Home Inspector, I left my position as a service engineer and opened a home inspection company, Total Home Inspectors, LLC, with my soon to be wife. In creating this company to grow, I gave myself that feeling of advancing forward again, which I am sure you all know what I'm talking about. Now I get to enjoy a technical career, while working with new home buyers and real estate agents, with future plans for wise investments. Fortunately, I am constantly told I am the most professional home inspector people have met, which I like to attribute to and am grateful for my experience as an engineer. In furthering our creative marketing, we are now branching out and would like to discover a new niche' of customers, being real estate investors! I have a passion for real estate investing myself, and would love to build a relationship with investors in the Long Island, New York area. I do believe my experience as an engineer in the corporate world has separated me from other inspectors you may have come across, and would enjoy working with the bigger pockets community in my area. I look forward to talking with you all.
Best regards,
Tom Meccariello
