Getting Deed

Hi All,

I've been speaking with an out of town seller for a couple of months. She's having some trouble with getting to the point where she can sell her vacant property (had it rented out but is tired...the last tenant trashed the place).

One specific questions she's asking me is how she might get the deed for the property, as she has misplaced it. I told her to get in touch with the entity who sent it to her. She said it was so long ago she doesn't even remember who she'd need to contact or how to contact them.

How might I help her get the original deed (or a copy of)?

Contact the recorder/clerk of the county where the property is located. "The deed" is an abstract idea that might be embodied in a piece of paper. But the deed is recorded with the county, and copies are readily available.

From your title, I wonder if you are thinking you need the original to do a transaction, like you do for a car. That's not the case for real estate. You do the transaction at a title company and a new deed is generated.
