U.S. immigration officials plan to conduct a "major sweep" in San Francisco and other Northern California cities over the next few weeks in the recently-minted "sanctuary state," reports the San Francisco Chronicle.
Centered in the Bay Area, the campaign has its sights set on over 1,500 undocumented individuals - sending a message that federal immigration policies will still be enforced in the 'defiant' sanctuary state. According to The Chronicle, ICE will be flying immigration enforcement officers in from around the country to assist with the raids - which will include worksites believed to be harboring illegal employees. The raids could take several days, according to an unnamed source.
Why not find out if they are illegal, if possible, and if they are report them and move on immediately to a new tenant. Better to plan ahead for it than wait and be surprised.
If you are doing thorough background checks how could you not know if someone is an illegal immigrant?
No social security number? No valid US identification? Sorry but I need to run your credit and criminal history, so if you don't exist in the system I will just pass on you as a tenant.
Careful background checks are necessary and I wouldn't be surprised if any direct question about "where are you from" or "are you here legally" gets you in trouble somehow. granted these are Massachusetts cases.. just saying be careful.
@Michael Biggs @Mike S. @Ihe O. @Michaela G. Here it comes. It's Saturday at 10:00pm - do you know where your renters are?

@RJ Reynolds In MA, national origin IS a protected class. Legal residency is not.
Dont worry about the rent , worry about clearing out all the stuff , replacing the door when they bust it down , fixing the damage from the flash/bangs they throw in when they bust them .
All in a days work
Thank you for clarifying that @Charlie MacPherson. I find myself walking on egg shells at times. It comes with the territory.
@RJ Reynolds Me too. I don't know of a single person that supports actual discrimination based on the big 7 federally protected classes. But knowing that the MA Commission Against Discrimination has actual testers out there that actively try to trick agents into saying something that can get them prosecuted is pretty scary.
Apparently the courts have already ruled that "entrapment" is no defense.
The thing I try to bang into the heads of my agents is a line I learned in my licensing class: "We can talk about PROPERTIES not PEOPLE."
