New Investor from NYC

Hi,

I am a new investor from NYC.  I am amazed at the amount of information available at BiggerPockets.  I was wondering if anyone had recommendations on cash flow markets around the NYC area.  I was looking into Pennsylvania and Connecticut.  I've read that I shouldn't go too far from home for my first purchases.  Is that sound advice or should I broaden my search farther south?  Feel free to drop any miscellaneous advice also.
