Need recommendations for portable podcast player

My husband has had an iPod Nano for years. He likes to listen to the podcasts while he works outside and doesn't want to use his phone since it could get broken.  Using iTunes is a big pain and I'd like to get him a new MP3 player that would easily download subscribed podcasts, keep his place in the podcast if he turns off the player, etc. Any suggestions?

I used to use an iPhone to listen to the podcast.  I now use an Android phone with the Stitcher App.  I really like it.  You can also download the mp3 files from BP for free, which I like to do as an offline backup.  Does he have a smartphone?

Using his phone will not be an option for him.  I've mentioned a heavy-duty case, but he's not going for it.  We have a farm, and he works outside with equipment, is climbing on and off tractors, etc. The ipod nano is small enough to fit in a tool pocket that can be closed so that it's secure.  It would be perfect if I didn't have to spend an hour trying to load it with podcasts every time.

I just thought there might be a device with wifi that would update the podcasts automatically like a smartphone does.
