Quick question about contractors

do you have to pay a contractor to come look at your property that you want to flip just to give an estimate?  Or do you pay him after the work is done if you use his services? ?

I never pay a contractor for estimates.  If they want the work then they will do a free estimate and I will pick the contractor that I think is best suited for the job (notice i didnt say "has the best price").
