New California Real Estate Brokers Requierments
I graduated last year from a top 15 American university with honors in Economics (B.A) and Chemistry (B.S.).
I've been wanting to obtain a real estate brokers license for a while now and just realized the requirements changed, that now they require a major or minor in Real Estate.
I can easily go back to my school obtain a minor, but my school does not offer a minor in real estate.
My questions: Are there any alternative minors that may work? Urban planning and studies? Accounting? Business?
Any chance of the new rule law changing any time soon?
Would a an associates degree in Real Estate from my local community college work?
Does anybody know any part-time accredited schools that allow one to enroll just for a minor?
I might be wrong on this but I think the college courses you are talking about only pertain to a managing broker not a real estate sales person (agent) You should still be able to go through any number of state approved schools to obtain the required number of hrs to take your test, it's 90 hrs here in Washington, and you can take them online or in a classroom setting. Your best bet is to call the DOL and speak to someone there about it.
I'm aiming for the Real Estate broker's license, not the sales-persons license.
From what I read from the DRE faq on this issue, the only option for me is to attain a minor in Real Estate somehow. I know I can get one in a single semester given the courses I have, but I need to find a state school that will accept me full-time just for a minor.
Now that I think about, I meet the majority of requirements for the real estate major.
I think may take the post-bac route and just get the major in Real Estate, though it may cost more.
You are correct. Unfortunately there is no way to get a minor after you already have your bachelor's. You can however try to get a second bachelor's or a Masters degree with a major in RE.
I urge you to consider the time required to complete a new major with the minimum in house credits required by a school vs getting a salespersons licence, completing the required courses to be a broker while working as a RE agent. Before you know it, two years have passed and you can take the broker exam and you already have RE experience! :-)
I'm not sure where you are but here in SoCal, SDSU seems to offer a major in real estate. Hope this helps you!

Yea, I was thinking of a handful of schools particularly in Southern California.
I would do the two years experience as a RE agent, but I can finish the post-bac major in a little more than 1 semester, including the in-house credits.

As an aside, post bac sounds like a French expression to me. Am I close? :-)
