New Agent - Sorting your contacts

One of the first recommendations that I always see for new agents is to compile a list of people you know to create your Sphere of Influence.  These are the initial people that we are to begin reaching out to in order to make them aware of what you are doing so that you can start building your business.

As I'm sort of new in town, I'd estimate that less than 10% of my contacts (in gmail, facebook, linkedin) are not close enough geographically to make them people I'd market to for local home buying/selling.  So, my question is, how can a real estate agent properly leverage these out of area contacts?  How (if at all) would you reach out to these people in a way to build your business?

Thanks for your consideration.
