professional software suggestions

I just finished Rental Property Investing by Brandon Turner.  The book mentions training programs for use of QuickBooks but neither of these websites exist anymore.  I'm more of a pen-to-paper person (because I'm 50+ yrs old and admit that I hate most technology).  I am interested in the most efficient spreadsheet, be it paper copy or otherwise.  Microsoft Excel makes me want to cry.  I have a property operating data sheet I like.  But I would like a straightforward  approach to keeping track of cost basis (purchase price, expenses, etc....) for possible sales in the future.  Any help for this would be greatly appreciated.
