University and Real Estate Inquiry

Tim Ross
Posted

Hi there,

I'm heading off to university this year and need a bit of advice from the BiggerPockets community.

I've always enjoyed the idea of real estate development and investing ever since I was young. When applying to universities after graduation, I selected schools that offered a bachelor of commerce with specialization in real estate.

The idea I have with this is that I would earn my bachelor's degree, work with a development firm in my area to learn the ropes of real estate more, and slowly transition myself into investing and developing independently, based off the experience and knowledge I gained from the firm.

My question to you all today is: would it be worth getting a commerce degree with a specialization in real estate? Or, should I look into a more 'secure' degree that will land me a position in the healthcare industry, and learn real estate through other sources?

Having a degree in the medical field would most likely guarantee me a higher starting wage as compared to my commerce degree option, therefore I would have more income to source into my own real estate ventures earlier on - just without the extensive real estate knowledge. Please let me know what actions you would take if you were in my position.

Thank you all for your help!
