Real Estate Licensing

A few people I've spoken with lately have advised me to get a real estate license. What is the general opinion on this subject? I can see the benefits of getting licensed, but I am apprehensive to spend the money on it (it looks to be around $500 in Michigan, is that right?).

For those of you that are licensed, do you recommend in person classes rather than online? Is there a difference?
