Question on WHEN to start

Hi

I'm just getting started on learning all about real estate.  I'm very motivated to go all in on rental properties, but my question is...Do most people wait to have their own personal home paid off BEFORE buying rental properties?  I'm about 3 years away from paying mine off.  My issue is that I hate carrying debt.  I have the cash reserves for a down payment on a rental, but I'm hesitant to carry two mortgages.  I'd love to get some feedback from people who have bought while still carrying their own mortgage.
